The landscape of the village is dominated by Katajavaara on the north side of Lake Yli-Kuoliojärvi and, in addition to the mentioned lake, the landscapes of lakes Kovajärvi and Vääräjärvi. The surface of the village’s lakes is about 14 meters higher than the surface of Lake Kuusamojärvi. Kuolio is located on Maanselkä.

The southwestern part of Kuusamo is dotted with small water bodies. Maanselkä divides the area’s surface waters in two directions. The highest forest covered hills in the area are Hyvävaara and Lohivaara located in the southwestern part of the area. Purnuvaara has been selected as a provincially valuable landscape entity.
