Kuolio – the name sticks to mind

The name of the village of Kuolio (fin. gangrene, necrosis) stops you. The image needs to be corrected: the name comes from the name Guollejavri given to the fish lake by the Forest Sámi. Guelli, meaning fish, is in the plural in the name, meaning plenty of fish has been obtained.

The village in a landscape of forest covered hills by the water is a typical Kuusamo village, but Kuolio is also the Village of the Year from 1993. The busy highway 20 between Oulu and Kuusamo runs through the village.

Several small villages are located in the Kuolio region; Kuolio, Kurkijärvi, Jokilampi, Purnuvaara, Pulkkanen, Käsmä, Visala, Särkelä, and Penttilänvaara.
