Vuotunki, Suorajärvi

Traces of the whetstone factory

What do you see when you vuottuu? One of the explanations for the origin of the name of Vuotunki village tells of a strong Sámi past: hunting was practiced here. Vuottuu means that you can see the tracks of an animal.

In Vuotunki, you can still see signs of the Jyrkänkoski whetstone factory. Kuusamo’s industrial production has its roots here.

Vuotunki is a large area from the settlement around Lake Vuotunki to the village of Suorajärvi and all the way to the border of the nation: Käkilehto, Jyrkänkoski, Kuntijärvi roadside, Heponiemi, Saarenkylä, Ala-Vuotunki, Suorajärvi, Vapavaara and Paljakka. The most familiar of the region’s place names seems to be the legendary big trout river Kuusinkijoki.
