The definition of a Kuusamo dozen comes from Määttälänvaara, where at the end of the 18th century almost all people were either of the Määttä family or the Lämsä family of Suininki’s Korppiniemi and Multasniemi.

Määttälänvaara is one of the most significant cultural landscapes in Koillismaa.

A long sandbank juts into Lake Suininkijärvi in ​​the heart of the village, houses spared from the flames of war stand in a rural landscape, and the village is guarded by the grand hill Veskelvaara. The shop and school yards have become quieter.
