Hevonvitunkoski and other peculiarities

Purnuvaara is a village of high forest covered hills on the ridge of Maaselkä, in a sparsely populated region in the western corner of Kuusamo, near the border of Taivalkoski and Posio.

Traces of civilization are visible in Purnuvaara. Hevonvitunkoski (horse pussy rapid) used to roar at the western end of Soilunjärvi. The name was gradually cleaned up and the powerplant is now known as the Soilu plant.

Another peculiar location of Purnuvaara is Hyväjärvi, which was once drained into meadow land. There is an interesting traditional landscape around the small lake.

The origin of Purnuvaara’s name is probably from the word puorna, which means a wooden cage built on or inside the ground, where fish and game were stored.
