Kylänniemi

Kylänniemi is a beautiful, approximately 200-meter-long sandbar formation in the heart of the village. The cape is the common area of ​​the village and, above all, a swimming place.

Bird watching region

Määttälänvaara is a favourite destination for bird watchers. The area has a lot of open fields, lush slopes and, above all, plenty of water bodies. The most important of these is Lake Suininkijärvi with its bays, capes, islands, shallows, and lush, grove-like beaches.

The white-throated dipper winters in Jyrkänkoski’s Varisjoki. Several species of geese have been found in the Junkisuo fields of Määttälänvaara.

Lake Suininkijärvi

Lake Suininkijärvi is 17 kilometres long, with a surface area of ​​22 km² and belongs to the national water protection program. There are many islands and capes in the lake: Latosaari, Lamposaari, Lehtosaari, Sonninluoto, Lompsinsaari, Vasikkasaari, Ukonsaari, Purnusaari and Ruumissaari or Lomasaari. Vendace and whitefish can be fished in the lake.

Suininki means hay place. Limonite has been found in both Suininki and Suorajärvi, and according to tradition, bog ore has also been found in Suininki.

Veskelvaara

On top of Veskelvaara (350 m) there have been dances and bonfires, there was always someone playing, so that there has always been music. According to the story, the hill got its name when one rainy day a Sámi man and a man from Savo met on top of the hill and the man from Savo said “Ves’kel” (watery snow) while patting the snow. The Sámi man thought that other meant the name of the hill and he too stated that “Veskel”. The hill became Veskelvaara.
