The silver treasure of Pyhälahti

In July 1896, four hundred silver coins were discovered in Pyhälahti in Kuusamo. The discoverer was Herman Nikka. The money has probably been in the ground for about 800 years. The treasure was found in mossy tussock.

The money was mostly German pennies. A few Arabic, Anglo-Saxon and their copies, and a few Danish coins were also found.

It is uncertain how and by whom the money was hidden in the tussock. It is suspected that the hider could have been a Sámi who hid the payment for their furs. Or some eastern or western merchant who has had to hide the travel fund for one reason or another.

One theory is also that the money was an offering. However, the cache was poorly hidden.

The location of the money cache is in Kantokylä, on the north-eastern shore of Lake Kuusamojärvi, 100 m north of the neck of Lake Lamminpuro, which connects Pyhälahti and the Lake Pyhälampi to the east.
